MUSIGA Elections- Corruption At The Grass Root

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has set June 26, 2019 as the date for its national elections with regional elections following on October 25, 2019.

This will be followed by its 2nd Biennial Conference in Accra on June 25, 2020.

The elections will elect a new leadership for the Union after the term of the current executive under the leadership of its President Bice Osei Kuffour aka Obour.

This was announced few months ago by the General Secretary of the Union, Deborah Freeman at its 1st Biennial Conference in Cape Coast. The conference was under the theme Building a Vibrant Union for National Development.

The National Elections Committee of the Musicians Union of Ghana has also announced the list of eleven candidates contesting for the MUSIGA national elections scheduled for June 26. The election will take place nationwide in all the ten old regions.

The final list has two candidates vying for the President, 1st and 2nd Vice President slots and the General Secretary. Below is the final list of candidates:
1. Gifty Ghansah National Welfare Officer
2. Rev Edward Edusa-Eyison National Treasurer
3. Chizzy Nii Adu Wailer National Organizer
4. Sylvia Bosompem Amponsah General Secretary
5. Samuel Kofi Agyemang General Secretary
6. Deborah Freeman 2nd Vice President
7. Ruth Benny Wood 2nd Vice President
8. Rev Dr. Harry Thomas Yawson 1st Vice President
9. Richard Karikari Mensah 1st Vice President
10. Bessa Simons  - President
11. Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi  - President
According to the chairman of the National Elections Committee, Smart Nkansah, “The vetting exercise was very insightful and the committee was satisfied with the general level of enthusiasm and commitment to improving the Union displayed by the candidates.”

With musiga election getting close and all aspirants preparing and campaigning for the various positions in the union, it is alleged that some regional executives are demanding huge sums of money from aspirants ranging from 500 to 5000 Ghana cedis and other items. One of such statement to aspirants states "Any candidates who want to enter Ashanti region to do his or her campaign must at least come with minimum of 2000 to support our vision of buying our instruments."
Other regions are demanding for money and signpost etc. Voters are also demanding money from aspirants. This is corruption at the grassroots level. This must stop.

The organizers of this years Ghana National Gospel Music Awards has stated categorically that this years awards was free and fair by all standards.
